Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) can once more be found on social media platforms. It operates accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Telegram, and even TikTok.

This comes a year after the election management body shut down its social media accounts.

The shutdown was motivated by the hacking of its Facebook page, as the perpetrators shared a message claiming opposition leader, Maurice Kamto was the actual winner of the 2018 Presidential election, not Paul Biya.

ELECAM shortly after the June 23 hacking, shut down its social media platforms and announced investigations had been opened to track those responsible.

Shortly after, two suspects were arrested but later released. While the ELECAM Director General, Erik Essousse failed to say what has become of those responsible for the act or if they were ever caught, reports say he assured the population the situation is now under control.

“At the preventive level, efforts are made to sensitize personnel on best daily practices with adopting to ensure protection against cybercrime and to define a general security protocol for usage by the team tasked with managing these pages, ” he told The Guardian Post newspaper.

The team, he reportedly added, also “took steps to protect the different mobile equipment and web servers with suitable antivirus software and of course, the introduction of an effective watch system”.
