A child of about five years old has been uncovered to be under maltreatment from the mother in Kumba ,Meme division of the South West region, MMI has gathered.

The mother whose name MMI got as Madam Takang is reported to be locking him up at home on daily basis while spending time with a boyfriend far away.

The reason MMI gathered is allegedly due to the physical disability status of the child.

A rights group uncovered the abuses after several complains from neighbours.

“Few weeks ago I received a disturbing call about a certain lady in Kumba by name Takang who is seriously abusing the rights of her own son of 5 years old just because this child is having disability and can’t walk,” an activist at The United Network for persons with Disabilities and Minorities in Africa told MMI.

The activist after visiting Fiango, scene of the act, said “this lady locked the child all alone at home in one ‘carabot’ room inside one quarter here in fiango mulango street and is now living with her boyfriend at Paradise street! She only goes home to feed the child and bath him once a day”

He narrated: “I was there and the child was crying inside the locked room. After contacting the Lady, she said I should mind my business and she was even asking if she could give me transport to go and report”

It is alleged that the practice of caging disabled children and maltraleating them at home is common amongst women in Kumba.

Rights activists are calling for action to be taken by legal authorities to stamp out the practice.
