The closure of Mbveh market, the biggest trading center in Kumbo has been lifted.
The decision suspending the closure was made public shortly after the town’s Mayor said it was being closed to combat separatist fighters’ activities.
Mborong Vernatius Bonkiyung, Mayor of Kumbo had on September 15th 2022 signed a decision announcing the closure of the market, effective September 30th,2022, alleging that it had become a source of income for armed separatists whom he described as terrorists.
The Mayor’s decisions reportedly met condemnations across the board, prompting a rethink.
In what many describe as throwing in the towel, the Mayor through his second deputy, in a separate communique suspended the decision.
“The Mayor of Kumbo Council hereby informs that the communique bearing on the temporary closure of Mbveh market as from the 30 September 2022 has been suspended till further notice”, the latest communique reads without further details.
The suspension is likely to bring a sigh of relief to traders and the local population who were already confused on what to do in the face of the closure.
