Cameroonians living in the United Arab Emirates, UAE, have decried extortion by Dubai embassy officials in the process of renewing their passports.
Some of these Cameroonians who spoke to MMI complained that officials are taxing them to pay higher sums of money other than the official amount set for the renewal of passports.
Meanwhile, they told MMI that they risk being frustrated further if they dare question these officials for exploiting them.
“I have been working living in Dubai for seven years. You cannot imagine the humiliation that Cameroonians are going through here in UAE,” a victim told MMI.
“Cameroon consultate in Dubai is asking for 110,00 FRS for online registration. Once you get to the consulate for finger print, they will ask you extra 65,000 frs,” he added.
The victim who spoke to MMI on condition of anonymity said, “I went there two months ago and paid 110,000 to register online. When I got there, I was told by the security that, if I don’t have 350 AED, which is 65,000 francs in Cameroon currency I won’t continue with my passport renewal process.”
The additional 65,000 francs he said is for certification, following what he was unofficially told.
MMI learned that Cameroonian Embassy officials in Dubai allegedly extort money from their victims and threaten them not to say anything about it.
One of the supposed victims said they are being threatened that they risk not acquiring the most needed papers, if the ask questions.
“If you try to fight or ask questions they will frustrate you and you will never get the passport,” he said.
This alleged extortion is reported to have been going on for several months now.
