Observer contradicts ELECAM, Atanga Nji on smooth conduct of Senatorial Elections

An observer of the just ended Senatorial polls has given an alternative view concerning the elections, after earlier reports made by Elections Cameroon and Territorial Administration Minister Paul Atanga Nji about the smooth conduct of the elections.

Speaking to CNA, the national observer Barrister Wame said the elections did not go in the best condition.

Her observation, which does not, however, touch on the objectivity of the polls, comes two days after vote casting on Sunday, March 12.

“I noticed the absence of an emergency unit to take care of people who could be vulnerable or sick. Somebody could fall, so I was expecting to see perhaps the red cross or fire fighters,” she is quoted to have said.

Another observer that CNA quoted said women were not well represented in the elections, which came four days after Women’s Day was celebrated.

Nevertheless, few complaints have been heard from parties that participated in the polls.

The government praised the conduct of the elections, with ELECAM’s Director General Erik Essousse noting on Monday that the elections were free, fair and transparent.

Minister Atanga Nji, who briefed the press few hours after the Sunday polls, said they went on smoothly and in conformity with existing laws.

Based on the Electoral Code, the Constitutional Council will produce a report on the conduct of the elections, alongside the election results, not more than 15 days after polls have closed.
