In an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest individual cooking marathon, Ghanaian Chef Failatu Abdul-Razak faced disappointment as she failed to meet the strict guidelines set by the Records Management Team.

The cooking marathon, also known as a cook-a-thon, began with high hopes on January 1, 2024, attracting global attention. The initial plan was to conclude the marathon on January 5, 2024, but Chef Failatu extended it until January 10, 2024, ultimately recording an impressive 227 hours. This far surpassed the existing record set by Irish Chef Alan Fisher at 119 hours and 57 minutes.

However, the Guinness World Records team, in a released statement, pointed to a violation of the rest break rules as the reason for the unsuccessful attempt. Despite this setback, the Records Management Team commended Chef Failatu’s dedication and urged her to submit future record proposals.

In a statement released today, Chef Failatu expressed deep gratitude to her sponsors and partners who supported her throughout the journey. She remains undeterred by the setback and views the experience as invaluable, committing to continue pushing boundaries in the culinary world.

Headline sponsors Electroland Ghana, Pomo Tomato Paste, and Verna Mineral Water played a crucial role in making Chef Failatu’s culinary marathon possible. Other partners, including the Ghana Tourism Authority, Jordin Kitchenware, the Tamale Teaching Hospital, and the Ghana Armed Forces, were also acknowledged for their support.

Failatu Abdul Razak, known for her innovative approach to cooking, continues to inspire audiences worldwide with her culinary creations. While her attempt did not result in a new world record, it undeniably showcased her dedication and hard work in the culinary industry.

Kafui Dey, the coordinator of Abdul-Razak’s challenge, expressed regret, stating that her attempt “unfortunately fell short of meeting the stringent guidelines set forth by Guinness World Records.” He highlighted a violation of the rest break rules as the primary reason for the unsuccessful attempt.

Despite the setback, Failatu Abdul-Razak received widespread support from politicians, celebrities, and the Ghanaian military. Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, among others, rallied behind her throughout the cook-a-thon.

In a gracious acknowledgment, Chef Failatu thanked her supporters, stating that their “backing has been instrumental throughout this journey.” While the Guinness World Record remains elusive for now, Chef Failatu Abdul-Razak’s culinary journey has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the global stage.
