The African Union (AU) has condemned the recent military takeover in Burkina Faso.
The coup was carried out on Friday, September 30, 2022 in the country’s capital Ouagadougou. The coup, led by Ibrahim Traore, was in a bid to overthrow the country’s president, colonel Paul Henry Damiba.
In a recent release, the African Union Commission chair Moussa Faki Mahamat, condemned the coup d’état. “The Chairperson of the African Union Commission unequivocally condemns equivocal, the second seizure of power by force in Burkina Faso,” he noted.
He equally called on the military to abstain from all forms of violence and urged them to return to constitutional order before July 1, 2024.
“The President calls on the military to immediately and completely refrain from any act of violence or threats to civilian populations, public freedoms, human rights and strict respect for electoral deadlines for a return to constitutional order no later than July 1, 2024,” he added.
He concluded by reaffirming the continued support of the African Union to the people of Burkina Faso, to ensure,”… the peace, stability and development of the country.”
