Paul Chouta is to appear at the Yaounde court of first instance Tuesday October 8th to answer charges of defamation and propagation of false news. The blogger and manager of Le TGV de L’Info is being accused of spreading false information concerning a Cameroonian writer Calixthe Beyala.

Formerly charged with defamation, false news and hate speech, the court of first instance dropped hate speech as a charge last June. The writer Calixthe Beyala has turned down calls for her to seek redress through civil remedies and not criminal actions against Paul Chouta.

Barrister Emmanuel Simh, the lawyer defending Paul Chouta contacted on phone this day in Yaounde. He says he expects a positive court session tomorrow for his client.
The blogger was arrested in Yaounde on the 28th of May 2019 and is under detention at the Kondengui prison.

The arrest and detention of Paul Chouta a web journalist in Cameroon has attracted several criticisms most especially from journalist that see the action as that designed to silence the press in Cameroon.
