The Fon of the Aghem people in Wum, Menchum Division of the North West of Cameroon, Fon Bahmbi ll has appealed for calm following the killing of four Fulani boys by yet-to-be-identified men recently.
The discovery of the bodies sparked what many have described as a communal tension between the Fulanis and Aghem communities.
Fon Bahmbi II called on the population to be calm and allow the authorities handle the situation.
“I want to plead to my people to play calm. The forces of law and order have already taken control. They should respect the law. They should take heart and treat those who have been wounded” he stated.
The appeal comes at a time when security forces have been struggling to bring the situation under control. In one incident, gunshots were fired in a bid to push back members of the Aghem community who staged a protest.
Communal tension between the Fulanis and Aghems is an old problem which has long been baptised farmer-grazier conflict.
The Anglophone Crisis has only compounded the only difficult situation in that part of the region.
Security forces have on many occasions accused of aiding the Fulanis against the local population. Reports from Wum say government forces have armed Fulanis to help them in their fight against separatist fighters.
According to a civil society activist in Wum whose names we are withholding for security reasons, Mbororos and Fulanis have been easily lured in the fight against non state armed groups because they too have suffered in the hands of separatist fighters in Wum.
“Many have been killed, their properties destroyed including cattle. Many of them have also been kidnapped and huge sums paid as ransom. Many have also sent their cattle seized by the armed men” he said, adding that “Mbororos have also carried out atrocities against the population including kidnap for ransom, assassinations, looting and other forms of destruction.”
There are hopes that the efforts put in place to bring the situation under control will yield the desired fruits and cause peace to return.
