‘Amba’ scare forces more Anglophones to drop out of race for February elections

Several candidates for the upcoming municipal and legislative elections have been pulling out of the race in the troubled Anglophone regions .

The candidates, it is evident are doing so due to mounting threats from separatist fighters who have declared “no elections ‘ in the Anglophone regions.

This week, Tikum Festus Forchibi, a native of Batibo in the North West region declined from running for the February 9 twin elections.

Given the socio political situation in the country, he explained that he could never have contemplated to apply to stand for the elections in the first place.

“I have the honor to write and request for the dropping of my name from the CPDM council list for Batibo” he writes.

Tikum Festus’ latest decision follows that of Mbah Humphred, another native of Batibo who made a release earlier calling on whoever put his name on the CPDM list for Batibo to withdraw it for the sake of his ” life and property”.

In the same light, several politicians in the Anglophone regions have also turned down the opportunity to run for the elections, with many citing the socio political situation in the regions.

In some parts of the regions, Ambazonian fighters have even threatened to deal with families of any person that dare run or vote in the upcoming elections.

Despite the threats, Territorial Administration Minister, Paul Atanga Nji during the last governor’s conference in Yaounde instructed all ten regional governors to ensure the February elections take place hitch free in all parts of their respective regions.

The security situation in the Far North, North West and South West regions he told the press is currently under control, lauding the forces of law and order in the areas.
