Andre Onana, a goalkeeper from Cameroon, has committed to playing with Manchester United for the next five years. On Thursday, July 20, 2023, the English club announced the move as they search for a new goalkeeper to replace David De Gea.
With Andre Onana’s signing, the 20-time Premier League champions now have two Cameroonians on their roster. Eric Djemba Djemba was the other Cameroonian to play for the Mancunians, signed by the great Sir Alex Ferguson.
Between 2003 and 2005, Djemba Djemba was a member of Manchester United’s first team. He played alongside legends like Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, and Paul Scholes. Andre Onana has made it his goal to win the Champions League with his new team, and he hopes to leave the club with a lasting legacy by doing so.
In the meantime, the Cameroonian goalkeeper has big expectations from Manchester United. United’s coach Erik Ten Hag was adamant about drafting Andre Onana because, in his opinion, he possesses all the qualities necessary to be a world-class goalkeeper.
The coach is looking forward to reuniting with Andre Onana, having previously worked with him at Ajax Amsterdam. Ten Hag has praised Onana several times, and said he will be very important in United’s quest for trophies henceforth.
