Anglophone Crisis: Bambui-Fundong road blocked, commuters stranded

The stretch of road from Bambui through Babanki, Njijikom to Fundong in the North West Region has been blocked.

For the past three days, commuters have remained stranded. Sources say the road has been blocked by separatist fighters operating in the area. The blockage has preventing vehicles from accessing the regional headquarters – Bamenda from Boyo division.

The blockage has made it impossible for people in need of healthcare services to access the highly solicited Mbingo Baptist Hospital located along the stretch. Funerals and other events initially planned for the weekend have been postponed and more.

“There is no visible blockage on the road, but we have been warned by the separatists not to use the road. Amongst us drivers, we had wanted to try if we can go, but it’s dangerous, for anything can happen” said a driver.

People have resorted to trekking from Mbingo to Bambui via Babanki before taking taxis to Bamenda.

“A young man who was referred to Mbingo hospital died yesterday in a local medical facility in Bamenda because for two days he has not been able to move to Mbingo. Those who traveled from far away towns in Cameroon like Garoua, Douala and Buea have been stranded in Bamenda and unable to continue their journey” said another driver .

Sources say, the separatist fighters imposed the blockage following the deployment of military to Big Babanki on June 9, 2023 to combat them. No duration has been given for the blockage.
