Armed conflict in North West, South West: Chomba population inconsolable as military extrajudicial killing rears ugly head again

Residents of Chomba, a village six kilometres away from Bamenda, the capital of Cameroon’s North West region, are mourning some of their loss in the ensuing armed conflict.

The deceased, are four civilians from the village picked up weeks earlier by the army during a raid.

The soldiers, locals say, had surrounded their locality during one of the multiple raids, finally leaving with the civilians.

“These four were killed and abandoned in a storey building,” a local told Mimi Mefo Info, adding that their bodies were only discovered recently, already decomposing.

Victims of the carnage in Chomba

Another source revealed two of the four civilians killed were a man and his wife.

Images and videos of the corpses in the abandoned building have since been trending on social media.

The Chomba incident adds to an untraceable number of extrajudicial killings carried out by the belligerents of the armed conflict in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions. The army has since the discovery of the bodies, however, remained mute, like in many similar situations.

As was the case of the Ndu massacre and several other acts carried out by the army in the conflict-hit regions, many are worried no justice would be served to the victims of the Chomba killings.
