Authorities launch crackdown on dissident bike riders in Yaounde

Administrative authorities in the town of Yaounde have announced repressive measures against those who fail to conform to regulations on the circulation of bikes.

The town’s Mayor, Luc Messi Atangana made the announcement while meeting with heads of syndicates of commercial motorbike riders today.

In attendance were security officials, representatives from the ministry of transport, as well as the Senior Divisional Officer for Mfoundi, Emmanuel Mariel.

“From tomorrow June 8th, all those caught defaulting circulation limitations will have their motorbikes impounded,” announced the City Mayor.

The Mfoundi SDO on his part tasked security forces with ensuring the decision is executed to the letter. He went on to call on Heads of syndicates to sensitise their members and act as the first disciplinarians.

The warning from the authorities comes months after the Africa Cup of Nations, (AFCON) during which riders were compelled to respect circulation limits.

Following the competition, however, authorities remarked there has been an increase in violation of the set rules as well as a rise in thefts and other law-breaking incidents connected to the use of motorbikes.

It is unclear what measures the authorities have put in place to reduce the high levels of unemployment which is largely responsible for high crime rates and the need for many young people to turn to motorbike riding as a means of earning a living.
