The shortage in domestic gas in the town of Bafoussam, situated in the West Region of Cameroon has left many residents stranded for close to two months today.
“This gas shortage is going to two months. On Monday morning, for example, there was no gas for sale. When I even call the suppliers, they no longer accept to take my line”, explained an owner of a gas distribution point.
If no solution is found in the days ahead, workers at the gas distribution points might risk losing their jobs.
“I am a cashier. But for 2 months, the company no longer operates normally because there is a shortage of gas. The boss says he’s going to close.”
Several cities in the West region are equally facing this similar worry as consumers are forced to fall back on local solutions as palliative measures.
Yet, even these solutions have limitations:
“We, heads of families have serious problems, since we are not in the village where we can easily find wood. Wood here is so expensive that you buy the bundle for 1,000 francs which will barely take you for two days,” cried a resident of Bafoussam.
The scarcity of gas is said had to have greatly affected its price. In places where they are available, 12.5 kilogram bottles are sold at 10,000 CFA francs instead of 6500 francs, which is the normal price approved by the Ministry of Commerce.
“We are told that in Douala, there is the refinery company and everything. We don’t know what it’s for. We cannot produce and then we are sold even more expensively”, laments a consumer.
For the moment, the authorities have not commented on this unavailability of gas, particularly in Bafoussam.
