Bamenda, capital city of the crisis-hit North West on Sunday September 18, 2022 was ‘inundated’ with tracks debunking another one week long lockdown.
Romours had been making rounds that an additional week of ghost town was announced to run from Tuesday till Friday this coming week, MMI gathered.
Independent findings show that no separatist group has made such an announcement.
Unconfirmed reports say rumours erupted last week purporting that an additional lockdown has been announced for Bamenda for being stubborn to a two-weeks lockdown earlier announced by armed separatists to frustrate school resumption based on the academic calendar run by the government of Cameroon.
“No lockdown next week. You are advised to go about your normal activities” a track from unknown sources seen on the streets of Bamenda reads.
Denizens say those profiting from ghost town are those always spreading fake ghost towns on Monday.
“I have come to discover that those selling drinks in the quarters especially are authors of this ghost town things in Bamenda at times” a Bamenda denizen told MMI on the basis of anonymity.
“Imagine someone will just see you and start saying that they have said nobody should come out tomorrow without telling you who said it” the denizen added.
Reports say liquor businesses boom in most quarters in Bamenda on ghost town days.
Yet, more residents say they fear disrespecting supposed calls for lockdown for their own safety.
