Battle to boost AFCON attendance:
Stakeholders condemn Biya’s adjustment of school timetable

Some education stakeholders in Bamenda, capital of the crisis-hit North West region have expressed worry over the recent decision of President Biya adjusting the school calendar.

Biya days back ordered the reduction of learning hours nationwide to fill up empty stadiums that have characterized the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON on course in Cameroon.
Parents and schoolchildren Mimi Mefo Info interviewed said, the adjustment would affect the teaching/ learning process.

To them, the action was not needed in a region still battling to catch up with years of separatists’ school boycott campaigns that has denied thousands access to education.

Teachers, parents and schoolchildren in examination classes say the impact would affect those preparing for end-of-year examinations.

A release signed by the Secretary General at the Prime Minister’s Office, Prof Seraphin Magloire Fouda stated that, Biya had reduced the closing time from 3:30pm to 1pm for three weeks.

Despite the concerns raised other students, teachers and parents said, they have made adjustments to fit into the new decision.

Some students say that they are using the time offered to them to watch AFCON matches.
