NW football fans decry poor infrastructure as clubs prepare for new season

Football fans across the North West region have bemoaned the poor state of infrastructure professional clubs in the administrative unit are using to prepare for the 2022 football season.


Most of the clubs in the region based in the regional capital Bamenda have intensified preparations using these poor infrastructure. They are training on dusty and uneven pitches.


With six teams to take part in the different championships, fans say it is ridiculous that the North West and Bamenda in particular has no befitting football stadium and other facilities.


The Bamenda Municipal Stadium is still in shambles. It was destroyed some time ago under the guise of plans to construct a modern sports complex. No work is being done there now.


Even with the election of Samuel Eto’o Fils as President of the Cameroon Football Federation, FECAFOOT, many North West residents are expressing fears that nothing would change in terms of football infrastructure in the region.


They say football in the region has been marginalized like Anglophones are being marginalized in Cameroon.


For elite I club Yong Sport Academy of Bamenda, YOSA, its coach Nkabyo Martin says the goal is to revive his squad in readiness for the new season. Nkabyo says since some players left at the end of the season, there is need to intensify training to get replacements.


PWD Social Football Club of Bamenda is yet to resume training. But reports hold that, like YOSA, the team would get back to the poor pitches in Bamenda February 3rd to prepare for the new season.


The club had suspended training after being active for months in anticipation for the finals of the Cup of Cameroon. The game which is supposed to mark the end of the football season is yet to take place. They are supposed to face Astres Football Club of Douala.


Clubs in the second tier league viz; Foncha Street FC and Rangers FC of Bafut have also been grappling with the bad football infrastructure in the region to prepare for the new football season.


Foncha FC has beefed its squad with new players and coaches.Meanwhile, Rangers FC of Bafut will be making its debut this season in the elite two championship. Coach Anumewa Frankline is expected to use his experience to guide the team to glory.



At the level of the female league, Vision Sports of Bamenda is also in training mood. Like the other teams, the squad too is battling with poor infrastructure in Bamenda. The team is planning to spring surprises in the Guinness Super League.


Unlike others ‘suffering’ with poor pitches and the absence of good facilities, Ita Mbong of Nkambe is currently training in Yaounde and Douala ahead of the start of the female division II championship.
