The recruitment process for new commandos of the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) officially began on July 21, 2025, in the Far North Region of Cameroon. The 1st BIR Command Post in Salak, Diamaré Division, conducts the exercise under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence.
5,093 Applicants Begin Selection Process
A total of 5,093 young men and women from the six divisions of the Far North have registered to compete for limited spots in this elite military unit. Known for its role in counterterrorism and national security, the BIR remains one of the cornerstones of Cameroon’s defense strategy.
According to officials on the ground, the first phase of the selection process includes administrative verification of candidates’ documents and a preliminary medical check-up. These initial steps aim to ensure all participants meet the basic administrative and health criteria.
Intense Physical Challenges Ahead
Following the initial screenings, candidates will undergo more rigorous physical tests. A 20-kilometer endurance run while carrying a 20-kilogram load serves as a key component. This phase tests candidates’ physical resilience, mental endurance, and ability to perform under extreme pressure.
“The upcoming tests are meant to assess core attributes such as stamina and determination — traits that are essential for anyone aiming to join the BIR,” said one officer overseeing the selection.
Presidential Initiative to Strengthen National Security
The President of the Republic, Paul Biya, is said to have initiated this large-scale recruitment drive to enhance the operational readiness of Cameroon’s special forces. The move further comes amid ongoing security challenges in the Sahel and surrounding regions.
Officials say the recruitment is also part of the government’s strategy to promote employment and professional opportunities for young people in vulnerable areas.
