In the wee hours of Wednesday, February 14, the quaint streets of Buea, in Cameroon’s Fako Division, were transformed into a vibrant spectacle of youthful exuberance as the city’s young population celebrated Valentine’s Day.

Mostly adorned in attractive red and white costumes, young people, predominantly girls, paraded through the streets, clutching bouquets that weren’t adorned with traditional flowers but rather with notes of 5,000 and 2,000 francs CFA, creatively fashioned to resemble floral arrangements.

The unconventional bouquets, symbolizing both love and financial prosperity, left onlookers intrigued and questioning the income sources of these celebrants, many of whom are reportedly unemployed.

The gifts exchanged were not limited to monetary bouquets, as some carried meticulously wrapped presents including gowns, shoes, phones, and cakes.

The atmosphere was filled with joy, particularly in cabarets and other public spaces where celebrants captured moments with souvenir photos.

Interestingly, a few individuals seized the festive occasion to propose marriage, adding a touch of commitment to the day dedicated to love and passion.

Valentine’s Day has historical significance, rooted in the Roman Catholic Church’s commemoration of two martyrs named Valentine, who were executed for arranging marriages that were outlawed by the pagan King Claudius II.

While the streets of Buea pulsated with jubilation, not everyone shared in the merriment.

Unconfirmed reports circulated of a student in Yaounde who allegedly faced a severe emotional crisis, nearly resorting to suicide after her boyfriend terminated their relationship.
