Fabrice Lena, Secretary General of the Popular Action Party (PAP), has been arrested in Douala, the party’s national president has told Mimi Mefo Info.
Lena was picked up in Douala, alongside Aboubakar Sidiki, president of the Patriotic Movement for Cameroonian Salvation (MPSC) party.
“It was alleged that they attempted to hold a meeting. They are presently at Commissariat Bonasama,” Njang Denis told MMI.
“So far, all attempts to get to Lena have since proved futile, he is not reachable on mobile,” said a source close to Lena.
Lena, it should be recalled, has been a fierce critic of the Biya regime.
He has also often called for political change, including a review of Cameroon’s electoral code.
Reacting to the arrests, Elvis Baneh, a Cameroonian politician and rights activist, said:
“We call for the immediate release of Mr. Lena as well as any other persons involved, for we of the PAP do not by any means caution against political intimidation and shall not succumb to any such political ploys and manoeuvres by the Yde regime. Citizens are all free to express their political views as long as they do not in any way pose any threat or hindrance to the smooth functioning of the state apparatus.”
