Buea Central Prison Inmate Impregnated, Author in Solitary Cell

Andong Pelagy Wanwanie, a 24-year-old female inmate at the Buea Central Prison, is three months pregnant. It has been found she has been having an intimate relationship with another inmate in the prison yard.

Authorities have reportedly placed Emmanuel Chukwu, the alleged author, in solitary confinement and stripped him of all privileges he had as a yard boy.

According to a Prison Warder who pleaded for anonymity, it happened in August this year when Emma Chukwu, fondly called Bunch, bribed a warder to let Pelagie into the locker room of the warders, where he reportedly had sex with her.

“Bunch had been nursing plans to have sex with the girl for long. They tried using the infirmary but it did not work. They tried the Yard Master’s office but it did not still work. Bunch had to pay off a Warder on duty at the visiting hall, to go and bring Pelagie as if she had a visitor. The warder told MMI, “They took the girl to the room where warders change, and they had quick sex.”

Pelagy showed signs of pregnancy for months and then fainted recently. The physician found her to be pregnant when she was rushed to the infirmary.

Pelagy confessed it was Emma Chuckwu and narrated the circumstances, prompting immediate interrogation.

After hours of denial, the suspect finally admitted his guilt, our informant said.

Serious Repercusions

Ndingue Simon-Pierre, the prison superintendent, immediately ordered the handcuffing of the inmate and his placement in the solitary cell.

They stripped him of all privileges granted to him as a Yard Boy (prisoners who instill discipline among other inmates).

The prison administrator further ordered all warders on duty that day to lock themselves in the warders’ cell.

It should be recalled that Wanwanie Andong Pelagy is among the six inmates who scored 100 percent at the 2024 GCE examinations. She scored three papers.

She is under pre-trial detention at the Buea Central Prison for a criminal matter involving money.

Meanwhile, Emma Chukwu is serving an 18-year jail term for involuntary manslaughter, for an incident that happened at Buea Town in 2010.

An ex-inmate who has consistently visited him since her release from prison in March this year is said to be his fiancee.

Cameroon’s prison regulations strictly prohibit close contact between male and female inmates.

The Superintendent in charge faces punishment for indiscipline if sexual affairs or pregnancy occur while in prison.
