The Cameroon Association of English-Speaking Journalists (CAMASEJ) Bamenda Chapter has issued a strong condemnation following the kidnapping of journalist and publisher Blasius Charles Nji in Bamenda on December 2, 2025.

Nji, who heads The Pilot Newspaper, was abducted by unidentified armed men believed to be separatist fighters operating in the North West Region. His disappearance adds to the growing list of journalists caught in the crosshairs of the nearly nine-year-old conflict.

CAMASEJ describes the incident as a direct attack on press freedom and a continuing intimidation campaign against media workers in the crisis-hit region. The association stressed that journalists are not combatants, nor instruments of conflict, but professionals carrying out a vital public duty.

“These recurring incidents not only endanger the lives of media practitioners but also undermine the fundamental role of the press in informing the public and fostering peace,” CAMASEJ stated, calling for the journalist’s immediate and unconditional release.

In its appeal, the Bamenda Chapter urged all actors, state and non-state to respect the safety and neutrality of journalists and ensure they can report without fear. The organization emphasized that freedom of the press is essential to democracy, accountability, and social stability.

CAMASEJ also expressed solidarity with Nji’s family and colleagues during what it described as a deeply troubling moment for the media community in the region.

“We appeal to anyone holding Mr. Nji to release him unharmed and without delay,” the statement concluded.

As the crisis persists, journalists in the North West and South West Regions remain increasingly vulnerable, raising growing concerns about the deteriorating state of media freedom in Cameroon.
