Lendzemo Emmanuel Fonban, Publisher of The Astute Ink newspaper has been chided by colleagues for his recent utterances on freedom of the press in Cameroon.
The Journalist cum publisher had appeared on Press Hour in national TV on Sunday May 8, 2022, where he gave his take on press freedom in Cameroon.
Responding to a question posed by the presenter, he said “If I were to be head of state today, I will no give room for freedom of the press…”
In a note by the Yaounde chapter of the Cameroon Association of English Speaking Journalists, CAMASEJ to which he belongs, Lendzemo was told to apologize and retract the statements in 72 hours.
“… We find these declarations by our member utterly out of place as it defeats the very purpose of existence of the Association,” the body’s President, Eugene Ndi stated.
He further mentioned the call for “Fonban to retract from this position …and give him 72 hours to tender a public apology to the press corps…”
Failure to do so he wanted, will attract further consequences.
