Supporters of 89-year-old president Biya have started trumpeting calls for him to run for the 2025 election in the country.
Paul Biya will be 92 when his current mandate ends.
But members of his party say his ‘brilliant performance’ at the just ended US-Africa summit was enough, to prove their leader’s ability to run for an eighth term.
Scores of them took to the streets of Bangante, West Region of the country, to celebrate Biya’s performance at the US-Africa summit — which they described as “commendable.”
The three-day summit took place from December 13 to 15 in Washington DC, with 49 African leaders in attendance — including Cameroon’s Paul Biya.
According to Biya’s supporters, his speech during the summit “lifted Cameroon very high, he is Africa’s wisest.”
The march was led Célestine Ketcha Courtès, Cameroon’s Minister of Housing and Urban Development.
58-year-old Ketcha Courtès who was appointed in December 2021 told the press that: “We are proud because the head of state, during the US-Africa summit, lifted Cameroon and Africa to the top of the world… Our youths in Nde are very proud of him.”
Their outing contradict views expressed by Camerooonians at home and abroad — who described Biya as frail and unfit to rule the country.
