As early as 11 am Monday, April 5th, 2021 at the Bonanjo Court of First Instance in Douala, a group of curious Cameroonians gathered to witness the trial of a popular crossdresser.
Lioc Midrel Njeukam popularly known as Shakiro is facing trail for attempted homosexuality, indecency and lack of a national identity card. The trial is due to take place at the Bonanjo Court of First Instance in Douala.
His defending lawyer, Barrister Alice Nkom has in the past trial pleaded the innocence of her client.
Shakiro was arrested on the 8th February 2021 in a restaurant in Douala and is in pre-trial detention at the New Bell Central Prison in Douala.
If found guilty, Shakiro may face a prison term of between six months an five years.
While international media organs are particularly interested in coverage the trial of homosexuals in Cameroon, most national media have found the trial of suspected homosexuals less news worthy.
“Homosexuality is against the natural believe of Africans and the law in Cameroon. Why should men and other women engage in that?” A journalist who prefers anonymity questions.
