Many social media users especially her fans were taken aback when award winning music star, Daphne Efundem simply known by her stage name Daphne took to Instagram to narrate her painful story of her life.
She narrated the ordeal on her official Instagram page Monday (https://www.instagram.com/p/CFqs7XFpe_j/?igshid=3rbkblckf4mf).
Daphne revealed to have been a victim of rape as a child, which has hampered her romantic life to the extent she hasn’t gotten intimate for close to 10 years.
Daphne in her lengthy post revealed to have had several failed relationships due to her lack and fear of intimacy.
“I suffered from panic attacks and threw up every time I tried to get intimate because I get the strong smell of his sweat and flashbacks of the scene” recounts Daphne.
She equally said many people have speculated several reasons as to why she has been unable to have sex.
“I have dated a number of guys who could’t understand why I couldn’t have sex. Some of them thought I was a lesbian, some thought I had sold my vagina demonically for success of my career, some just believed that as an artist I was sleeping around thus the reason why I couldn’t have sex with them” she narrated.
After suffering from several setbacks due to her childhood ordeals such as being diagnosed with “vaginismus” and several mental breakdowns, Daphne assumes to have been reborn into a new life, with the promise of living up to her womanhood.
She has taken up the initiative to be a role model for girls who have suffered childhood sexual abuses through her foundation @bewomanbydaphne.
Daphne’s post generated a lot of reactions from other music stars like Blanche Bailey, who had some words of encouragement for Daphne “…Glad sexual assault victims can finally become vocal in our society”.
Stanley Enow simply wrote “Solidly behind you” referring to her foundation and her aim to be a reference point to other victims. Other victims of such crime equally spoke out under her post by giving in their own painful experiences.
One of them wrote “I’ve lived with that for years now and what annoys me is no one seems to neither believe me nor take me seriously. Rape took every bit of me including my self-confidence and even my future”
Daphne’s outing has also inspired many young girls to speak up about their experiences at the hands of their abusers.
“I am a victim since childhood. Countless times by my own cousin,
Infact my heart is heavy,” said Nkeng Anastacia.
“I think that is the reason why it’s been difficult for me to have a family and bear kids,” another Instagram user, Daky wrote.
“To be able to come out and say it like this – you have started taking back all your perpetrator stole. You have moved beyond taking back to conquering the future for yourself and many other women. Right now, you are not the victim, but the pillar that will support many other women to overcome the trauma of rape and physical abuse. Remain strong,” Eileen Tabuwe, a gender promoter said on Facebook.
