Cameroon: Nine cholera cases confirmed, one death recorded

The deadly cholera epidemic has once more resurfaced in two of Cameroon’s ten regions.

A total of nine cholera cases have been confirmed in the South and the Southwest regions as well as one death recorded.

Seven of the nine cholera cases were detected at the Buea Regional Hospital, one in Tiko, all in Fako Division.

One case was confirmed at the Kribi central prison, Ocean Division of the South Region.
The first case in Kribi was discovered on September 20, 2020 in the Mboamanga neighbourhood.

The victim, a 31-year-old man, was discovered by the medical charity, Doctors Without Borders, with excessive diarrhoea and vomiting. He was later on tested and discovered to be carrying the cholera epidemic.
The confirmed case has set panic amongst the inmates of the Kribi Central Prison, as there have been many of them showing symptoms of cholera.

The sanitary conditions inside the prison and in some parts of the town of Kribi have only helped in breeding the epidemic in the region.

Moreover, with the recent floods in the town of Kribi, conditions are only bound to get worst if steps to mitigate it are not adequately taken by the local authorities in the region.
