Cameroon to host 23rd edition of African Athletic Championship

The 2024 African Athletic Championship will be hosted by Cameroon, precisely at the Yaounde Olembe Stadium.

The decision was confirmed by the president of African Athletics, Colonel Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, Cameroonian-born.

He revealed that the decision to award the rights of hosting to Cameroon came after the failure of the latter to host that of 2022, which he attributed to hitches faced in the organization of AFCON 2021.

“Our council decided to grant Cameroon the African Championships for 2022 when we had our council meeting in Qatar in 2019,” colonel Hamad Kalkaba said.

“Unfortunately, because the agenda was full with the African Cup of Nations and costly, we postponed that event and granted the rights to Mauritius to host the event” he added.

Colonel Hamad further revealed that the governing body of the African Athletics Federation considered Cameroon fit to host the 23rd edition, scheduled to take place in 2024.

“But now Cameroon is ready to host the Championships in 2024. On Thursday we spoke about this with the minister of sports. We will bring back the flag of the event to Cameroon. It is very important for Cameroonians to know that we are going to host the Championships” he noted.

Cameroon lastly hosted the competition during its 10th edition in the year 1996, precisely at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium.
