President Paul Biya has received His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican envoy to Yaounde.
After the meeting at the Unity Palace today, the long-serving ruler said the Vatican envoy brought him a message of peace.
“Today, I had a cordial conversation with Vatican’s Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin who delivered a message of peace from His Holiness Pope Francis,” President Biya noted.
The encounter comes within the context of a raging armed conflict in Cameroon’s minority English-speaking regions.
For four years today, government forces and separatists have been battling for control of two of Cameroon’s ten regions.
Many have called on President Biya to grant general amnesty among other measures, to establish a ceasefire and pave the way for dialogue.
