Some persons with visual impairments have been arrested and taken to the central police station in Cameroon’s capital, Yaounde.
They were staging a protest on Monday June 27, 2022, decrying the poor treatment persons with disabilities and those with visual impairments in particular face in the country.
“They were bundled up and detained by the forces of law and order, to our greatest dismay, how can they defend themselves,” questioned a witness.
The arrest and detention of the visually impaired sets a new all time low for Cameroon’s security forces and government officials.
It should be recalled that a similar crackdown in 2017 on lawyers and teachers escalated to an armed conflict and had claimed thousands of lives already.
By the time of this report the visually impaired detainees were not released and their plights have not been adressed.
