Cameroonian actors and filmmakers proudly showcased Cameroon’s cultural heritage at the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) cultural night held on May 8 in Lagos, drawing admiration for their elegant Toghu outfits and strong representation of Cameroonian identity on one of Africa’s biggest entertainment platforms.

Dressed in the iconic Toghu attire from Cameroon’s Grassfields region, the actors made a bold cultural statement during the glamorous red carpet event, where celebrities from across the continent gathered ahead of the main awards ceremony.

Cameroonian Stars Represent Culture Through Toghu Fashion

Among the Cameroonian personalities present at the cultural night were Claudia Fonguh, Ruth Nkwenti, Fuh Charlotte and Nchini Sylvia Bright, who attended as part of the Cameroonian delegation celebrating African cinema and culture.

Nchini Sylvia Bright represented the Cameroonian film Mabanda, produced by Kang Quintus, which secured a nomination at this year’s AMVCA.

Also present was popular Cameroonian-Nollywood actress Okawa Shaznay, whose appearance in Toghu attire attracted widespread attention online. Sharing images from the event, she wrote: “Repping my hometown North West Region, Cameroon,” a statement many Cameroonians celebrated across social media platforms.

The Toghu outfits worn by the Cameroonian actors stood out prominently during the cultural showcase, which featured traditional attire from different African countries and cultures.

Known for its colourful embroidery and royal symbolism, Toghu originates from Cameroon’s North West and West regions and has increasingly become a symbol of national pride at international events. Traditionally associated with royalty and prestige in the Grassfields region, the attire has evolved into one of Cameroon’s most recognizable cultural garments.

Many social media users praised the Cameroonian delegation for using fashion to project national identity and preserve cultural heritage on an international stage.

For several observers, the strong Cameroonian presence at the event reflected the growing visibility of Cameroon’s film industry within African cinema.

Cameroon’s Growing Presence in African Cinema

In previous editions of the AMVCA, Cameroonian participation remained relatively limited compared to entertainment powerhouses such as Nigeria and South Africa. However, this year’s representation signaled increasing recognition of Cameroonian actors, filmmakers and productions within the continental entertainment industry.

The nomination of Mabanda and the visibility of Cameroonian creatives during the cultural night highlighted what many see as a gradual rise in the country’s cinematic influence across Africa.

Industry observers say the growing participation of Cameroonian filmmakers in major African award platforms could open more opportunities for collaboration, distribution and investment in Cameroon’s entertainment sector.

About the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards

The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards is regarded as one of Africa’s most prestigious entertainment award ceremonies, celebrating excellence in film, television, acting, directing and digital content creation.

Launched in 2013 by Africa Magic in partnership with MultiChoice, the awards have grown into a major platform recognizing African storytelling and cinematic achievements.

The 12th edition of the AMVCA was held at the Eko Hotel and Suites, bringing together actors, filmmakers, producers, influencers and media personalities from across Africa and the diaspora.

Beyond the awards themselves, the AMVCA has become known for its glamorous red carpet fashion, celebrity appearances, cultural showcases and live performances.

This year, Cameroonian actors used the occasion not only to celebrate African cinema, but also to proudly project the beauty and uniqueness of Cameroon’s cultural heritage to audiences across the continent and beyond.
