A Cameroonian man has been confirmed dead in France after weeks of being reported missing, in a case that has shocked both the Cameroonian community and the public in Lyon.

Jean-Baptiste Moutassie, 29, also known as “Douk Saga,” had been missing since April 14, 2024. Investigators now say he was killed by his French partner, the mother of his seven-month-old child, shortly after the couple moved from Lyon to the Toulouse area.

His disappearance raised concerns after relatives noticed suspicious changes in their home, including fresh paint and new furniture, while his partner claimed to know nothing about his whereabouts.

The case took a major turn last week when the woman was placed in police custody and reportedly confessed to shooting Jean-Baptiste.

French authorities also suspect her father of helping to hide the crime. Under questioning, he allegedly led investigators to a river where Jean-Baptiste’s remains were found.

The suspect has claimed she acted in self-defence, citing domestic violence. However, investigators are examining the extent of the cover-up, including the cleaning of the crime scene and the concealment of the body, which could weigh heavily in the case.

French judicial authorities have opened a full investigation into the killing and possible complicity.

Within the Cameroonian community in France and back home, the news has triggered deep sadness and anger. Many are now calling for justice for Jean-Baptiste Moutassie, whose disappearance has ended in a tragic death.
