Honourable Koupit Adamu of the Cameroon Democratic Union (CDU) political party has said it is high time the National Assembly takes a stand on the armed conflict in the Anglophone regions of the country.
The CDU lawmaker made the remark at the start of the ongoing June session of the assembly.
Following the opening plenary session chaired by house speaker, Hon Cavaye Djibril, Hon Koupit told the press the burden is now on law makers to front for the structure to discuss the long evaded topic.
The MP’s remarks follow multiple calls for parliament to dedicate a session to discussing the armed conflict that has left thousands dead.
Many attempts by opposition MPs to have the matter discussed have proven futile, frustrated by the majority of MPs who belong to the ruling CPDM party.
As usual, the house speaker in his introductory word for the June 2022 session avoided mentioning the crisis, but praised government for the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Cameroon becoming a unitary state.
“The massive mobilisation of Cameroonians is eloquent proof of the unflinching attachment of Cameroonians to the unity of their country, the unity that was achieved at a great cost but whose bonds remains strong and are even stronger after 50 years,” he stated.
He further praised what he termed government’s “policy option on social dialogue”, and urged security and administrative forces to crackdown on activities of “clandestine” teachers’ unions.
