It has been 73 days since Dr Succès Masra, president of the opposition party Les Transformateurs, was taken into custody—placing the start of his detention around 14 May 2025. Party members and allies describe the arrest as “arbitrary” and have maintained a steady rhythm of public gatherings to call for his release.
On 26 July 2025, the party convened a large meeting at the Balcon de l’Espoir in N’Djamena.
The event united militants, sympathisers, party structures (including the Boucliers, DeneMosso, Coordinators, and the Cercle de Réflexion) and representatives of the Coalition Justice-Égalité, formed in preparation for the May 2024 presidential election.
Calls for unconditional release
Speakers repeatedly demanded the unconditional release of Dr Masra, arguing that the length of his detention is unjustified and counterproductive for the country’s political stability. A highlight of the rally was a speech by the representative of the coordinators, who referenced the Latin phrase “Ecce homo” (“Behold the man”) to underline what he framed as the broader significance of Masra’s legal situation.
The party’s Secretary-General, Dr Tog-Yeum Nagorngar, praised continued mobilisation inside Chad and within the diaspora. He also warned against what he said were attempts to intimidate certain supporters amid the ongoing standoff.
Weekly actions to maintain pressure
Saturday’s meeting also forms part of weekly demonstrations organised to contest what participants view as an infringement of fundamental freedoms. Organisers say the objective is to sustain pressure and ensure that the case remains on the national agenda in a political environment they characterise as tense.
