One person has been confirmed dead and others wounded in a confrontation between civilians and the military in Ndjamena, Chad Tuesday, April 27, 2021.
This was as some civilians holding placards marched along the streets denouncing the unconstitutional power takeover.
“No to transfer of power from father to son. No to military takeover of power. No to the non-respect of the Constitution”, were some of the inscriptions on placards carried by irate protesters.
In reaction, troops, on the instruction of the military junta, fired teargas and used other forms of brutality to disperse the population.
In the process, some protesters say one of them has been killed.
The protest comes days after the African Union called on the military junta headed by General Mahamat Idriss Deby to respect the Constitution of the land and hand power to civilians.
There has been increased tension in Chad since the death of its President, long-serving president Idriss Deby Itno on the 20th of April, 2021.
