Medics in Bamenda have cautioned that the basic rules of hygiene like regular hand washing, avoiding cold food, and food that has not been properly cooked, should be observed to prevent the spread of Cholera.

According to Doctor Chebo Cornelius, head of the North West Expanded Programme on Immunization who has championed the awareness creation, he says it is triggered by the recent outbreak of the cholera epidemic in Buea, South West region of Cameroon since January 28, 2022.

Doctor Chebo disclosed that cholera is manifested when one has frequent watery stool, caused by the germ “hybro cholere”.

“When infected, you have abdominal pains, regularly visit the toilet and your stool is very watery and it can lead to serious dehydration and other consequences” he added.

According to Doctor Chebo Cornelius, to prevent cholera, people have to be careful with the basic rules of hygiene like regular hand washing amongst others.

He called on the population to report any case of diarrhea to any nearby health unit for proper actions to be taken.

Bamenda water scarcity…

The outbreak of the cholera epidemic in the South West region of Cameroon it is feared, could spread to other towns especially Bamenda.

In Bamenda, there is acute shortage of portable water for drinking and cooking.

Many fear it would be worst, should the epidemic hit the Northwest capital, Bamenda.

A few cases and deaths have been recorded in the Littoral region already.
