In a significant development, Niger’s junta announced on Thursday that it has officially revoked multiple military cooperation agreements with France.
This decision comes in the aftermath of the military coup that resulted in the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum last week.
France has deployed a contingent of approximately 1,000 to 1,500 troops in Niger, actively engaging in combat against insurgent factions associated with al Qaeda and Islamic State.
These extremist groups have managed to extend their influence throughout the region, prompting France’s intervention in an effort to counter their activities.
On 26 July 2023, soldiers of the Presidential Guard commanded by General Abdourahamane Tchiani blockaded the presidential palace to depose Bazoum. The coup was condemned by the African Union and Economic Community of West African States
