Covid-19: Cameroon’s reported cases rise to 66, the highest in West Africa.

Cameroon on Tuesday, March 24th 2020 recorded 10 new coronavirus cases raising the total to 66, the Ministry of  Public Health confirmed.

In a statement on his tweeter account, Minister Manaouda Malachie did not specify where the infected patients came from, but called for a “sacred union around measures to combat coronavirus”.

“It is together, in discipline, solidarity and in all responsibility that we will overcome. Stay at home, let’s look at the barrier measures, ” Minister Malachie added.

Cameroon is now having the highest number of coronavirus cases in West Africa after Burkina Faso with 64 cases. On Monday, the country recorded its first death since the pandemic hit the country early March.

Critics of the government have questioned whether the country of some 28 million people which has been struggling to deal with a secessionist conflict, Boko Haram crisis will be able to tackle the new pandemic.

The government has put measures in place to stop the spread including banning of public gatherings, closing of schools and shutting down of land and sea borders. But it seems more efforts need to be put in place to limit the virus’ further spread.

Over 42 nations across the continent have reported more than 2,000 cases of COVID-19.
