The ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) has praised the country’s defense and security forces for what it calls their “professionalism and determination” in restoring order after violent attacks on party property and public buildings in Dschang, Menoua Division.

In a statement released on October 16, the Secretary-General of the CPDM Central Committee and National Campaign Coordinator, Jean Nkuété, said security forces acted with “firmness and efficiency” in confronting alleged vandals accused of setting fire to the party’s Dschang office and the residence of the Rector of the University of Dschang.

The statement described the assailants as individuals “manipulated by opposition political parties” who, “in their frustration and inability to convince the people through the ballot box, resorted to hate, violence, and destruction.”

While some civil society voices have criticized the response of law enforcement as heavy-handed, the CPDM statement appears to support the robust tactics used by the forces.

“The party congratulates our defense and security forces for standing firm and using all necessary means to preserve public order, protect property, and prevent further chaos,” Nkuété stated.

The CPDM said the violence in Dschang followed “irresponsible public statements” and “incitement” on social media by opposition leaders seeking to destabilize the country ahead of the proclamation of results from the October 12 presidential election.

The party’s statement also reaffirmed its “unwavering attachment” to peace and republican institutions but warned that it “will not be intimidated by anyone.”

It called on regional and local party officials to remain vigilant and to cooperate with security authorities “to prevent any further attempts to harm CPDM interests.”

Nkuété further announced that the party would take legal action against those identified as responsible for the burning of the Dschang party house.

“Our forces acted within their duty to ensure national stability. Their firmness should serve as a deterrent to all who think violence is a tool of political expression,” the statement added.

As the Constitutional Council prepares to announce official election results, the CPDM reaffirmed its confidence in victory, claiming it remains the only party with full representation in all polling stations nationwide and abroad.

The statement concluded by commending the loyalty and “patriotic spirit” of Cameroon’s defense and security forces “who continue to safeguard republican order with courage and discipline.”
