The Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM), the ruling political party, has issued an official statement addressing recent remarks made by opposition leader Maurice Kamto and the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM).

The press release, signed on June 10 by Jean Nkuete, Secretary General of the CPDM Central Committee, criticises what it describes as “increasing acts of hate, threats of violence, and institutional defiance” allegedly aimed at destabilising the nation and damaging Cameroon’s international reputation.

CPDM Criticizes Political Rhetoric Linked to Maurice Kamto

While not naming any individual directly, the CPDM appears to reference Maurice Kamto, accusing unnamed opposition figures of making personal remarks about President Paul Biya’s age and promoting what the party called a “sacrificial insurrection” inspired by foreign political events. The CPDM described such comparisons as “irreverent” and “inapplicable to the Cameroonian context.”

The statement also condemned what it characterised as efforts to incite tribal tensions and solicit international pressure against Cameroonian institutions. Such actions, the CPDM warned, represent “dangerous provocations that aim to derail democracy and undermine national unity.”

Reaffirming Commitment to Democratic Values

Jean Nkuete further reiterated the CPDM’s commitment to upholding republican principles, the rule of law, and democratic governance. “Democracy must be practiced within the framework of legality and mutual respect,” he stated, cautioning that “personal ambitions must never endanger the lives and safety of Cameroonian citizens.”

CPDM Calls for Responsible Political Discourse

The CPDM called on political stakeholders, media professionals, influencers, and social media users to act with responsibility during what it described as a crucial electoral period. “Now is the time to promote peace, tolerance, and mutual respect, not to fan the flames of hatred, institutional defiance, or tribalism,” the statement read.

In conclusion, the CPDM reaffirmed its role as a defender of peace and national stability, describing itself as the “shield and arm of support” for President Paul Biya.
