CPJ to release 2019 annual list of journalists imprisoned worldwide

The Committee to Protect Journalists, CPJ will in the days ahead release its annual census of journalists imprisoned worldwide.

The list set to be released on December 11, 2019 presents journalists jailed as of midnight on December 1, 2019, and indicates the country where held, charge, and medium of work in each case.

Of the most obvious countries expected to feature on the list is Cameroon whose journalists are currently facing a series of challenges reporting the raging conflict in the Anglophone regions.

According to the CPJ, 7 journalists were imprisoned in 2017, with the likes of Mancho Bibixy, and Tsi Conrad. It also States that several pressmen have been killed in Cameroon between 1992 to present.

“The census does not include the many journalists who were imprisoned during the year but released prior to December 1” CPJ states.

Prior to the launch of the report, CPJ has for the past days been highlighting the stories of some journalists currently behind bars through its Free The Press Instagram campaign.
