Democratic Republic of Congo: Patrice Lumumba’s remains to be restituted

The remains of former DRC Prime Minister, Patrice Lumumba have been restituted to the country from Belgium.

His remains will be handed over to his family almost 60 years after his painful execution, months after his was voted to power.

The body of the former leader was said to have been hacked up and dissolved in acid by the Belgians.

One of the soldiers who had taken part in the destruction of Lumumba’s body is said to have preserved his tooth as a souvenir.

The tooth will be placed in a casket and then flown back to DR Congo for burial.

Congolese authorities were today in Belgium together with Lumumba’s family to participate in the restitution ceremony.
