Despite Popular Complaints, Media Reports, Government Dismisses Price Hikes Claims

Cameroon’s Minister of Communication and Government Spokesman has debunked earlier media reports that the Cameroonian economy is witnessing a skyrocketing increase in the prices of basic commodities.

Rene Emmanuel Sadi signed a release on December 24, 2021, rejecting the reports, after noting that made specifically on the airwaves of France 24, on December 23, 2021.

According to the communique, the report on the above TV station noted that prices of basic foodstuffs have increased tremendously, such that many Cameroonian families can barely feed properly, a situation which the report says could lead to population uprising, prompting Emmanuel Rene Sadi to indicate the report threatens both stability of institutions and social peace in Cameroon.

While claiming that the aforementioned report is void of strength and truth, the Minister claims that as of December 24, markets all over the Cameroonian territory were heavily stuffed, to meet the population’s consumption needs, likewise fighting inflation which according to the minister is under control in Cameroon compared to any nation in the world.

“Inflation rate in Cameroon stands at 2%, being the best-performing economy worldwide, given that the covid-19 pandemic has hit all nations, the resilience of the Cameroonian economy is acknowledged globally”.

The release stated that the report is an instrument to create chaos amid the population, attempting to provoke the population to an uprising.

The Minister’s document however said the government is assuring Cameroonians of efforts channeled towards pleasant end-of-year festivities.



Cameroonians react to, affirm price hikes

Before the Minister’s release, Cameroonians in Fako division expressed grave concerns about the fast-rising prices of basic commodities. Many people say with all that is happening in the Anglophone regions, rising prices of basic foodstuffs should be a major concern, in favor of the already devastated population.

Like in Buea, a denizen, and Mother of 6 in Tiko, complains and affirms that they are facing a heavy increase in prices of basic foodstuffs. She notes that the price of groundnuts oil (Mayor) rose from FCFA 1,100 in some areas to FCFA 1,700 and FCFA 1,800, adding that tomatoes and others are no different cases.

Knowing there is nothing they can do, but survive amidst the rocketing prices, ordinary Cameroonians are pleading with concerned authorities to act faster than ever in resolving the population’s plight.


Cameroonians react to the Minister’s release on price hikes

After Minister Emmanuel Sadi’s communique, many inhabitants of Buea, the chief town of the South West region, noted particularly the paragraphs stating that the prices of basic commodities are unrealistic, and the inflation rate in Cameroon is under control.

To this effect, many of them say such is always the language of the Cameroonian authorities, debunking and claiming control of issues greatly affecting those they call compatriots and rule over.

Some went ahead to recall the statement of Minister Paul Atanga Nji who debunked in 2016, the existence of an Anglophone Crisis that is indiscriminately consuming lives today, with many all is in control statements from other state officials, about the secessionist war, including Emmanuel Sadi.
