Domestic Gas Access To Expand with Kumba LPG Centre Launch

Minister of Trade Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, representing the Prime Minister, officially launched the construction of the Kumba Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Filling Centre on April 29, 2025. The ceremony took place in Barombi Kang, a locality in Kumba, the chief town of the Mémé Division in the South West Region. Authorities hope that the centre will address the issues of domestic gas shortages.

Key dignitaries attended the event, including South West Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai, Okie Johnson Ndoh, Director General of the Hydrocarbon Price Stabilisation Fund (CSPH), Véronique Moampea Mbio, Director General of the Cameroonian Company of Petroleum Depots (SCDP), and Bako Harouna, Director General of the National Refining Company (Sonara).

“A Product of First Necessity”

During his speech, Minister Mbarga Atangana underscored the critical role of domestic gas in Cameroon’s national energy strategy:

“In Cameroon, domestic gas is considered a product of first necessity, and the annual growth rate is around 13%. National consumption stands at approximately 220,000 metric tonnes per year,” he stated.

He also emphasised the urgent need to address regional disparities in gas distribution, revealing that Yaoundé and Douala currently consume 80% of the national supply.

Infrastructure to Match Growing Demand

Valued at 6 billion FCFA, the Kumba LPG Centre will be Cameroon’s fifth facility of its kind, following similar centres in Maroua, Bertoua, Bamenda, and Ebolowa. The plant will span 5 hectares, boasting an initial storage capacity of 200 cubic meters, with expansion capabilities to meet future demand.

The selection of the Southwest Region as the site for this new infrastructure is both strategic and pragmatic.

“This region, covering 24,570 km² with a population exceeding 1.5 million, is experiencing rapid demographic and economic growth,” noted Minister Mbarga Atangana. “It is home to the University of Buea, the Higher Technical Teachers’ Training College in Kumba, and many other major institutions.”

Ending Long Journeys and High Prices

Before this project, residents of the Southwest had to rely on the SCDP depot in Douala, located 65 km from Buea, 130 km from Kumba, 250 km from Mundemba, and 300 km from Mamfe. This logistical challenge led to frequent shortages and inflated gas prices, with a 12.5 kg cylinder costing between 7,500 and 10,000 FCFA, compared to the official price of 6,697 FCFA.

“This local infrastructure will ensure permanent availability and compliance with government-regulated pricing,” affirmed the Minister. He also highlighted the project’s environmental benefits, stating that promoting LPG usage reduces pressure on forest resources.

Community Welcomes the Initiative

The project has been warmly welcomed by local residents and leaders. Traditional ruler Chief Emmanuel Angwa expressed gratitude on behalf of the community:

“We thank H.E. President Paul Biya for this show of attention to our region. This filling center will not only ease access to domestic gas but also create jobs for our youth.”

The Mayor of Kumba echoed this sentiment and called on the community to protect the facility:

“This infrastructure is a gift from the Head of State to the entire Southwest Region. It is our collective responsibility to safeguard and make proper use of it.”

Construction Timeline and Quality Commitment

According to the project plan, construction is expected to take 24 months. Minister Mbarga Atangana urged the contractors to strictly adhere to the deadlines and uphold high-quality standards.

“Let us ensure that this facility becomes operational as soon as possible, to the great benefit of our people,” he concluded.

The Kumba LPG Filling Centre represents not just an investment in infrastructure but a significant stride toward energy justice and sustainable development in Cameroon’s underserved regions.
