Donald J. Trump has been officially sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. He took the oath of office Monday, January 20, 2025, to serve and protect the people and constitution of the United States for the next four years.
The ceremony took place inside the Capitol in Washington, DC.
Trump took over from Democrat Joe Biden, who served only for one term after beating Trump in the 2020 elections.
Biden’s age compelled him to decline from contesting in last November’s election that saw Trump defeat Kamala Harris.
The inauguration ceremony was supposed to take place outside the capitol, but owing to the cold, it was moved indoors.
On day one as President, Trump signed a series of executive orders repealing some decisions taken by Biden.
He is strong on immigration, as he promised to carry out the highest deportation in US history.
He declared a national emergency on the southern borders; ended the arrest and release of illegal migrants; designated Latin American drug cartels as foreign terrorist organisations and invoked the Alien Enemy Act.
“We will do it at a level nobody has ever seen before,” Trump said, referring to the deportations his administration plans to carryout.
He blamed inflation on overspending and signalled the start of oil drilling in the US.
“America will be a manufacturing country once again,” he added.
To him, they will export American energy to the world.
Trump is very positive about the growth of the US economy during his mandate.
He plans to tax other countries to enrich US citizens.
“The American dream will soon be back like never before,” he promised.
Another executive order he has signed is to stop all government censorship and restore free speech in the US.
In 2016, he was removed from numerous social media platforms after claiming that he won the 2020 elections.
Trump, on day one, recognised only two genders—male and female—promising that it will be the official policy of the US under his administration.
He also plans to pardon January 6, 2021, rioters who supported Trump’s claim of victory in the 2020 elections. Trump will also provide relief for victims of the wildfire that ravaged dozens of homes in Los Angeles, California, early this month.
“From this moment, America’s decline is over,” he said in his inaugural address. “We will be working to meet every crisis with dignity.”
Donald Trump promised to not get America into any war, promising to be a peacemaker and unifier. He wants to reverse the chaos outgoing President Biden is leaving behind in Gaza, where the US has openly backed Israel to commit war crimes.
Trump appreciated the release of Israeli hostages taken by the Palestinian group Hamas in October 2023, an event that sparked a conflict that has killed tens of thousands.
One of Donald Trump’s major decisions on the first day in office was to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
He also reiterated that America is going to take over the Panama Canal from Panama, citing that the US has been unfairly treated over the years.
He said China has been operating there, although the US, and not China, played an influential role to build the canal.
Donald Trump capitalized on his campaign slogan of making America great again or MAGA. He said he wants to make America respected and admired again by all around the world.
“We will stand bravely, dream boldly,” he said. His plan is to restore the US’ image to one that is feared and respected.
He wants nations in the world to envy the US and his foreign policy will be to put America first.
The audience at his inauguration received his speech with episodes of standing ovations.
Several prominent leaders around the world attended the inauguration, among them the Presidents of Italy and Argentina.
Also present were several business and tech tycoons.
