Two people were shot dead and at least one was seriously injured in Cameroon's economic capital Douala today when a road transporters' strike led to clashes with police, witnesses said. One witness said that two men were shot in the Bessengue district of the port city, and a Cameroonian journalist confirmed to AFP that the bodies were taken to the mortuary of Douala's Laquentinie Hospital. The strikers were protesting at a rise in fuel prices and those of several basic products, but Douala is also a stronghold of the opposition to President Paul Biya, who has been in power since 1982.
