Teachers and students in Ekondo Titi, South West Region of Cameroon continue to go about their daily activities in fear. This is after their peers were gunned down in class less than two months ago.
“I was right in class but God protected … my phone was carried away alongside my Identity card,” says a teacher, adding the perpetrators are now using the details on the document to issue threats.
“The gunmen are saying they are very much aware of where I am living in Ekondo Titi and will come after me,” the teacher testifies.
Despite this, the school, like government officials have remained resolute, asking teachers to return to the classrooms: “The school is asking us to mount courage and come back…”
All attempts to be transferred out of the town, the teacher says, have yielded no results, leaving them at the mercy of the gunmen that carried out the shooting.
Memories are still fresh of the November 24, 2021 incident where unidentified gunmen stormed a government school in Ekondo Titi in the South West region, killing students and a teacher.
Initially, many had pointed accusing fingers to separatists who have continually threatened to harm those attending classes and their teachers.
Like was the case with the Kumba school massacre however, separatists and government continue to exchange blames for the incident.
Kids of school going age and their teachers remain in a fix, knowing they could again be victims at any time. Government’s promised security like the first time, some say, would amount to nothing.
