An estimated eleven people have reportedly been killed in Esu, a locality in Fungom, Menchum division of the restive North West region of Cameroon.

Sources in the area say Fulani herdsmen committed the macabre act on Wednesday December 7, 2022.

Locals say the situation escalated after the fulani herdsmen accused locals of burning down pasture needed to feed their cattle.

“All these past days it is not easy in Esu. Mbororos keep attacking them,” a source told MMI.

“On Wednesday four people were killed there and today seven are being slaughtered in a sub village in Esu called Gayama,” the source added.

Our source who was speaking on the basis of anonymity further cited the names of some of those killed in the attack. They include: Fang Justus, Buh Nwa, Meh Eli, The rock(not real name), Bong CY and Meh Tom.

He said thele fulani herdsmen accused locals for: “trespassing in to their area and burning grass meant for their livestock.”

Another source claimed that last week the fulani went on a killing spree after their cattle had destroyed crops in Gayama.

Retaliation

Sources say, the Esu incident, which is not the first of its kind provoked clashes between the fulani herdsmen and armed separatists fighters resulting in the death of one separatist fighter and five herdsmen.

It should be recalled the problem between farmers and grazers has been lingering in most parts of Menchum Division, before the emergence of the raging armed conflict in the two English speaking regions of Cameroon.

The ongoing conflict had deepened the inter communal tensions according Human Rights reports.
