Eto’o Insists Marc Brys Has Resigned

Samuel Eto’o, President of the Cameroon Football Federation, has insisted that Indomitable Lions coach Marc Brys has resigned, despite the latter denying having quit his job.

In a letter to the Sports Minister today, Eto’o asserts that Brys terminated his contract with immediate effect, contradicting Brys’ claim that his resignation letter, dated July 21, 2025, was fabricated due to a hacked email.

This dispute, which is rooted in a turbulent relationship since Brys’ appointment by the Sports Ministry in April 2024, threatens to destabilize Cameroon’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

“The Cameroon Football Federation was never associated with the negotiation and signing of the contract binding Mr. Marc Brys to the State. FECAFOOT never obtained a copy of this contract and was unaware of the payment terms for the remuneration related to it. It could not, therefore, orchestrate a ‘manipulation’ by speculating on their irregularity,” Eto’o wrote.

He pointed to acknowledged salary payment delays, regularized on July 18, 2025, and noted the resignation letter’s date—three days later—as evidence undermining claims of a forged document.

“In any case, the existence of payment arrears (acknowledged by yourself) is likely to instill reasonable doubt about the hypothesis – implied – of a false resignation fabricated by FECAFOOT,” Eto’o wrote.

Brys, who denied resigning in a video message on July 23, 2025, insisted, “I was surprised by what was published. I have not resigned. I don’t see why I would do so. I live in Greece, so I couldn’t have signed that letter. Once again, I am still the coach of Cameroon.”

Supported by the Sports Ministry, which funds his role, Brys emphasized his focus on upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Cape Verde and the AFCON.

However, Eto’o’s letter doubles down, declaring, “After having demonstrated that no manipulation of any kind was orchestrated within the Cameroon Football Federation, we firmly assert that, based on the documents in our possession, Mr. MARC BRYS has indeed terminated, knowingly, his contractual relationship with Cameroon with immediate effect.”

The controversy has ignited public debate, with posts on X reflecting divided sentiments.

Some social media users support Marc Brys, citing his unbeaten record (7 wins, 5 draws in 12 matches), while others back Eto’o, pointing to administrative chaos under the Sports Ministry’s oversight.

The clash, following a history of confrontations between Brys and Eto’o, including a May 2024 public altercation where Eto’o sacked and later reinstated Brys after an apology.

With Cameroon second in their World Cup qualifying group and facing a critical match against Cape Verde in September, the uncertainty surrounding Brys’ status could jeopardize the Indomitable Lions’ ambitions.
